I was admitted February 1st, 2016 for a tumor removal and tongue reconstruction and was told it was a 1 -2 day proceedure.I woke up 11 days later surrounded by my family and 3 or 4 md's I had never met or heard of before. My reconstruction had complications so they kept me in a drug induced coma for the entire time allegedly waking me up to sign auth papers for more proceedures.

I was told I would never eat again, that if I left the hospital I would be dead within 24 hours and was verbally chastised by the infectious disease MD (Dr Ignacio R). I relented and allowed the eager and curious students of medicine (a term I use with extreme caution) to perform 7 more days of testing and nauseating IV antibiotic therapy, repeated ct scans, eegs and no less then 4 blood drawings a day. The entire time I was losing 3 - 4lbs a day and they refused to tube feed me or give me any nourishment at all. After a week I signed myself out (per my family md's reccomendation) with all drains, sutures and stitches, went home and began to feed myself Ensure, gatorade and Pivot 1.5 (my family dr prescribed).

Within hours I had mental clarity, energy and was able to sit up, stand and take a shower (things I was told I would most likely never be able to do again). After 3 days I realized I was in fact getting better by the hour and decided to go back to CC and have the drains and stitches removed. I was admitted via ER and they immediately began a battery of tests including more blood work. My white cell count had increased DRAMATICALLY since I left 3 days prior so a young MD (again one I never saw before in my life) came to my room at 2am and told my wife and I that because my white cell count was so much higher that the cancer had spread to my lung and I needed and immediate needle biopsy of my lung, I was devistated, I asked how he would think this by just a blood test and tried to explain I had been feeding my self and felt much better.

He screamed at me (the second CC MD to do this) and dared that I questioned his abilities. I agreed to more ct scans of my lungs, another EXTENSIVE battery of antibiotics and became weak and feeble again after 2 days. My wife began bringing me boost and ensure in the hospital (as they agreed to give to me but never did) unless I walked to the nurses station and begged. After another week of this I demanded they remove the feeding tube and trache (with they said I HAD to keep in) so I wouldnt choke to death on food or water "if I was dumb enough to try".

Again I signed myself out, went home, continued my self feeding via tube and began to accept that I may never eat again. I continued to gain weight adding suppliments to the tube feeding regimen (as much as I could cram down that tube). After 2 more weeks I decided that if I couldnt eat again and was going to choke to death it would be on my own terms. I soon discovered I was able to eat ANYTHING with a little learning and began to revisit all the food I was expecting to never enjoy again.

I removed the trache and feeding tube myself (pleanty of stuff on web as to how to do these proceedures). I scheduled a follow up visit with my surgeon (a truly great human being and the only one that saved my life at CC) Dr Michael Medina, upon arriving at the office they entire staff pretty much looked at me as if they had seen a ghost, I was 20 lbs heavier, strong, handsome and without the trache and feeding tube. Dr Medina FREAKED out but was very understanding of my situation. He said he NEVER had a patient like me and that I was an inspiration to him and every other person on his staff.

Fast foward to now (almost a year later) I'm in the best health of my life, I work out and run every day, have lost 80+ lbs since before the surgery and truly have never felt better. I can say with all confidence that Dr Michael Medina saved my life and actually made it better, I have a small lisp but can eat just as before and the only noticible scars are where Dr Medina removed my lymph nodes in my neck (not a requerment and they were entirelly cancer free!).

As far as the staff, the nurses were angels to me, and expressed their agreement of my view of the medical staff on call. Dr Medina SAVED MY LIFE FROM CANCER, I SAVED MY LIFE FROM CLEVELAND CLINIC.Scot C Mills - CANCER SURVIVOR
